G’day!

This website is here to show my past work in animation and game design, as well as current content, projects and products!

I spend most of my time creating content on my Youtube Channel Draw With Jazza, where I teach people how to draw, animate and paint, so go subscribe, and if you’re interested in directly supporting me, the Shop is the best way to do so while getting nice things for yourself too!

Enjoy looking around!

“THE MINISTRY OF SILLY WALKS” – 2016 Animation Challenge!

‘THE MINISTRY OF SILLY WALKS’

DEADLINE:

September 26th 2016

THEME:

Participants must animate an expressive, silly and over-the-top looped walk cycle.

The animation must be 30 FPS (Frames Per Second), with the loop duration being a total of between 20-60 frames. The walk cycle may be looped several times, but the maximum duration of the final video must be a maximum of 1 minute long.

The walking character must be centered in the video and remain in place in full profile view, facing the left side of the frame. The character may be walking in an environment (cityscape, space station etc.) moving behind him, and the environment may include ambient animation, but must not contain any additional characters.

Entries will be judged on the animation quality and execution, the creativity of the walk and motion, its physicality, humor and visual appeal. Entries may be entirely tweened, frame by frame animated, or anything in between. 2D hand drawn stop motion animation (‘traditional’) is also allowed.

GOOD LUCK!

I’ve put together an FAQ list so you should be able to find the answer to the most common of the questions here! It can be really hard when putting together a challenge, anticipating what people want to do or what questions they will have, so I hope this helps for any that come up after, for further clarification.

FAQ’s

DOES AN ENVIRONMENT HAVE TO LOOP OVER 20-60 FRAMES TOO?

No, the frame restriction is for the character only, though how you animate the background is unlikely to increase your chances for a prize, if anything a distracting environment will be a disadvantage in judging.

CAN I HAVE SOUND?

Yes you can add sound to your animation, but it will not impact on the final competition. I will just be assessing the animation itself, not the sound (although it will not disadvantage you to have it either).

WHY NO 3D ANIMITATION? (Or claymation/stick figures etc)

I have to compare ‘apples to apples’ as they say. In other words I need a consistent format and medium to do a fair judging. The majority of people on my channel work in 2D so I go with the majority.

WHY AM I LIMITED TO SUCH A SHORT LOOP DURATION?

The challenge is specific and short because:

1) I need to make sure I have pieces that are drawn for this competition. The main reason for this is copyright, I try really hard to stop people entering others work they have stolen on the net

2) As the piece is meant to be a ‘challenge’ limiting participants to 20-60 frames creates a handicap that could bring out the best in really creative people, remember it’s not meant to be easy!

3) I want the competition to be approachable for first timers. I am trying to encourage new animators. It can be an intimidating medium to start in, but a small challenge like this provides an approachable first step.

4) I need to watch and judge all the animations. Carefully. I do not know how many entrants I am getting but the last animation challenge had HUNDREDS of entrants. Even with a 1 minute limit, if there are hundreds of entries again, that’s HOURS of watching entries, let alone judging and compiling entries.

CAN I SUBMIT AN ENTRY THAT HAS A DIFFERENT: length, frame count, topic?

No, the rules are there to give me some point of comparison so I can judge fairly, to give everyone a level playing field and also to make sure that the works are original and not stolen from others.

CAN I ANIMATE A CHARACTER FROM A: video game, comic, movie?

Yes, awesome no problems here!

CAN I USE PHOTOSHOP, TOONBOOM OR SOMETHING ELSE?

You can use any program as long as it can produce a submission that meets the guidelines- specifically 30 fps, 20-60 frames of animation in 2D illustrated form and rendered as a high quality 16:9 video

WHAT MAKES SOMEONE A ‘BEGINNER’?

You know if you are a ‘beginner’ and you enter the ‘beginner’ competition but be warned if you do label yourself ‘beginner’ you are not eligible for the open category prizes. This is to stop people who actually are advanced trying to win the encouragement award. If you have done professional (paid) animation work then you are not a beginner.

CAN I WIN MORE THAN ONE SECTION?

No you greedy bastard!

CAN I SUBMIT IF I AM FROM INDIA/FRANCE/ICELAND/WINTERFELL ETC?

Yes!

CAN I USE YOUR ANIMATION COURSE TO HELP ME?

Yes but you don’t have to. Use it if you want and not if you don’t. I am not judging you negatively for using any helpful resources, but don’t copy or steal someone else’s animation.

CAN I SUBMIT IN GIF FORM?

No.

DO I HAVE TO USE MY REAL NAME TO SUBMIT?

Yes and no. No you don’t have to have your real name initially in the submission (video title) but should you win I will need you to email me your name along with your address, to send your prize. This is obviously private information and I don’t publish it anywhere.

I hope this list of FAQ’s has helped, if you have any further questions please contact me via the contact page of this website.

Most entries will be showcased in the compilation video as thanks for your participation. Please do not send me emails or PM’s linking to your entry, I WILL FIND IT if you upload as instructed and by the deadline!
