December 2016 Challenge of the Month

‘HERO & PET: GAME CHARACTER DESIGN’

DEADLINE:

December 10th 2016 (Draw with Jazza COTM)

December 5th 2016 (NonStop Knight Comp)

THEME:

Create a design concept (Traditional OR Digital – 2D ONLY, no 3D modelling) of a HERO and PET, for a ‘Medieval Adventure‘ themed video game, in a cartoony style.

The hero must be anthropomorphic but isn’t restricted to being human, meaning they must walk, stand, move and share a similar skeleton to a human, but you may be creative in the charicteristics of your ‘Hero’. You ‘Pet’ also isn’t restricted to being a conventional animal, but they should be smaller than the hero, and very clearly, a ‘sidekick’.

PLEASE NOTE: Entries may be presented with or without an acompanying environment, but this will have minimal impact on the judging. The core aspects being judged are as follows:

1 – The visual appeal of the hero and pet design, and how they complement one another

2 – Good use of design aspects like silhouette, color, shape, style etc

3 – The compatibility with common ‘game design’ structural parameters, such as polygon count, cloth/hair and rigging limitations etc.

A FEW CLARIFICATIONS for the CHALLENGE OF THE MONTH:
you may have a male, female, or non-gender-specific hero. you MUST create original characters for the competition (all depictions of copyrighted characters will be disqualified). the hero’s pet should be no bigger (but I recommend smaller) than the hero. your final piece should clearly show the DESIGN of the hero and pet, this may be portrayed ‘concept art’ style or in an environment, but avoid extreme poses, motion and foreshortening. you may include elements of magic, whimsy, or some blood or macabre themes (within reason), however your submission must still be medieval-adventure themed with the hero and pet being portrayed as good protagonists. your characters must be depicted in a cartoony style – however this doesn’t mean you are restricted to mimicking the Nonstop Knight visual style – it just means no ‘Skyrim’ levels of detail or realistic proportions – imagine you are designing for Web or mobile rather than ps4 or high end PC.

Upload your finished artwork to the Newgrounds.com Art Portal

GOOD LUCK!

I’ve put together an FAQ list so you should be able to find the answer to the most common of the questions here! It can be really hard when putting together a challenge, anticipating what people want to do or what questions they will have, so I hope this helps for any that come up after, for further clarification.

FAQ’s

DOES AN ENVIRONMENT HAVE TO LOOP OVER 20-60 FRAMES TOO?

No, the frame restriction is for the character only, though how you animate the background is unlikely to increase your chances for a prize, if anything a distracting environment will be a disadvantage in judging.

CAN I HAVE SOUND?

Yes you can add sound to your animation, but it will not impact on the final competition. I will just be assessing the animation itself, not the sound (although it will not disadvantage you to have it either).

WHY NO 3D ANIMITATION? (Or claymation/stick figures etc)

I have to compare ‘apples to apples’ as they say. In other words I need a consistent format and medium to do a fair judging. The majority of people on my channel work in 2D so I go with the majority.

WHY AM I LIMITED TO SUCH A SHORT LOOP DURATION?

The challenge is specific and short because:

1) I need to make sure I have pieces that are drawn for this competition. The main reason for this is copyright, I try really hard to stop people entering others work they have stolen on the net

2) As the piece is meant to be a ‘challenge’ limiting participants to 20-60 frames creates a handicap that could bring out the best in really creative people, remember it’s not meant to be easy!

3) I want the competition to be approachable for first timers. I am trying to encourage new animators. It can be an intimidating medium to start in, but a small challenge like this provides an approachable first step.

4) I need to watch and judge all the animations. Carefully. I do not know how many entrants I am getting but the last animation challenge had HUNDREDS of entrants. Even with a 1 minute limit, if there are hundreds of entries again, that’s HOURS of watching entries, let alone judging and compiling entries.

CAN I SUBMIT AN ENTRY THAT HAS A DIFFERENT: length, frame count, topic?

No, the rules are there to give me some point of comparison so I can judge fairly, to give everyone a level playing field and also to make sure that the works are original and not stolen from others.

CAN I ANIMATE A CHARACTER FROM A: video game, comic, movie?

Yes, awesome no problems here!

CAN I USE PHOTOSHOP, TOONBOOM OR SOMETHING ELSE?

You can use any program as long as it can produce a submission that meets the guidelines- specifically 30 fps, 20-60 frames of animation in 2D illustrated form and rendered as a high quality 16:9 video

WHAT MAKES SOMEONE A ‘BEGINNER’?

You know if you are a ‘beginner’ and you enter the ‘beginner’ competition but be warned if you do label yourself ‘beginner’ you are not eligible for the open category prizes. This is to stop people who actually are advanced trying to win the encouragement award. If you have done professional (paid) animation work then you are not a beginner.

CAN I WIN MORE THAN ONE SECTION?

No you greedy bastard!

CAN I SUBMIT IF I AM FROM INDIA/FRANCE/ICELAND/WINTERFELL ETC?

Yes!

CAN I USE YOUR ANIMATION COURSE TO HELP ME?

Yes but you don’t have to. Use it if you want and not if you don’t. I am not judging you negatively for using any helpful resources, but don’t copy or steal someone else’s animation.

CAN I SUBMIT IN GIF FORM?

No.

DO I HAVE TO USE MY REAL NAME TO SUBMIT?

Yes and no. No you don’t have to have your real name initially in the submission (video title) but should you win I will need you to email me your name along with your address, to send your prize. This is obviously private information and I don’t publish it anywhere.

I hope this list of FAQ’s has helped, if you have any further questions please contact me via the contact page of this website.

Most entries will be showcased in the compilation video as thanks for your participation. Please do not send me emails or PM’s linking to your entry, I WILL FIND IT if you upload as instructed and by the deadline!
