EDIT: This challenge more than any so far has been met with loads of questions, so I’ve put together an FAQ list so you should be able to find the answer to the most common of the questions here! Sorry about any confusion, it can be really hard when putting together a challenge, anticipating what people want to do or what questions they will have, and as it’s the first ever animation challenge there are more questions than usual. I hope this helps.

FAQ’s

CAN I HAVE SOUND?

Yes you can add sound to your animation, but it will not impact on the final competition. I will just be assessing the animation itself, not the sound (although it will not disadvantage you to have it either).

WHY NO 3D ANIMITATION? (Or claymation/stick figures etc)

I have to compare ‘apples to apples’ as they say. In other words I need a consistent format and medium to do a fair judging. The majority of people on my channel work in 2D so I go with the majority.

WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE TWO SECONDS?

The challenge is specific and short because:

1) I need to make sure I have pieces that are drawn for this competition. The main reason for this is copyright, I try really hard to stop people entering others work they have stolen on the net

2) As the piece is meant to be a ‘challenge’ limiting participants to 60 frames creates a handicap that could bring out the best in really creative people, remember it’ not meant to be easy!

3) I want the competition to be approachable for first timers. I am trying to encourage new animators.

4) I need to watch and judge all the animations. Carefully. I do not know how many entrants I am getting but the last challenge of the month had 780 entrants. If there are that amount of entries and everyone did 1 minute of animation that would take me 13 hours to watch through each one once with no time in between and taking no breaks. Very hard to judge since I will be watching them many times.

CAN I SUBMIT AN ENTRY THAT HAS A DIFFERENT: length, frame count, topic?

No, the rules are there to give me some point of comparison so I can judge fairly, to give everyone a level playing field and also to make sure that the works are original and not stolen from others.

CAN I ANIMATE A CHARACTER FROM A: video game, comic, movie?

Yes, awesome no problems here.

CAN I USE PHOTOSHOP, TOONBOOM OR SOMETHING ELSE?

You can use any program as long as it can produce a submission that meets the guidelines- specifically 30 fps, 60 frames of animation in 2D illustrated form and rendered as a high quality 16:9 video

WHAT MAKES SOMEONE A ‘BEGINNER’?

You know if you are a ‘beginner’ and you enter the ‘beginner’ competition but be warned if you do label yourself ‘beginner’ you are not eligible for the first or runner up prizes, only the encouragement award. This is to stop people who actually are advanced trying to win the encouragement award. If you have done professional (paid) animation work then you are not a beginner.

CAN I WIN MORE THAN ONE SECTION?

No you greedy bastard!

CAN I SUBMIT SOMEWHERE ELSE? (another website/email/format etc?)

No

CAN I SUBMIT IF I AM FROM INDIA/FRANCE/ICELAND/MEXICO ETC?

Yes!

WHAT IS TOO GORY? (Can I chop his head off?)

Cartoon violence is fine. Real horror violence that my wife would close her eyes for is not. (She won’t watch the Saw movies for example, or surgery) So yes you can chop off a head in a cartoon manner, and have blood flying around. This is because I have learnt that if you give people an inch they will often take a mile and I need works that I can display publically on my fairly tame channel lol

CAN I USE YOUR ANIMATION COURSE TO HELP ME?

Yes but you don’t have to. Use it if you want and not if you don’t. I am not judging you negatively for using any helpful resources, but don’t copy or steal someone else’s actual animation.

CAN I HAVE HIM DIE ON A DIFFERENT FRAME? (25. 32, 54)

If it is somewhere in the middle I am a little flexible but it must be in the middle portion of the frames.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY ‘IMPACT’ ON FRAME 30?

The impact is the moment of death, so the 30 frames at the start would be a build-up, setting the scene so we have a very short moment to see a situation before BAM – after frame 30 we see the point of highest intensity, settling down afterwards into a follow-through or wind-down.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY DRAMATIC?

Make it interesting. It’s your interpretation.

CAN I SUBMIT IN GIF FORM?

No.

DO I HAVE TO USE MY REAL NAME TO SUBMIT?

Yes and no. No you don’t have to have your real name initially in the submission but should you win I will need you to email me your name along with your address, to send your prize. This is obviously private information and I don’t publish it anywhere.

I hope this list of FAQ’s has helped, if you have any further questions please contact me via the contact page of this website.

Most entries will be showcased in the compilation video as thanks for your participation. Please do not send me emails or PM’s linking to your entry, I WILL FIND IT if you upload as instructed and by the deadline!
